What is a Science Hack Day?

The mission of Science Hack Day is to get excited and make things with science! A Hack Day is an event that brings together designers, developers, scientists, citizen scientists, web geeks, young people, the public, basically  anyone with good ideas in the same physical space for a brief but intense period of collaboration, hacking, and building ‘cool stuff’. Hack Days were originally created by Yahoo! in 2005 and soon after became a worldwide trend. By collaborating on focused tasks during this short period, small groups of hackers are capable of producing remarkable results. Some Hack Days have a specific focus. There have already been very successful Music Hack Days and Government Hack Days. It’s time for a Hack Day focused on science!

What is a Hack?

A ‘hack’ is a quick solution to a problem – maybe not the most elegant solution, but often the cleverest. On the web, mashups are a common example of hacking: mixing up data from different sources in new and interesting ways. Hacks can be either software or hardware (or a mix) and aim to bring to life interesting science.

Who is for?

Science Hack Day is for everyone and anyone, you don’t need to be a scientist or an expert to attend,  just bags of enthusiasm and imagination!

What can I do on the day?

There will be all sorts going on, we will have a team of experts from the fields of the arts, science, technology, engineering, and media who will be working with attendees to assist in the process of the making and the hacking, in general attendees will have the opportunity to make lots of cool stuff based around science, technology and art and be able to interact with people to build on projects which will be developed over the day and beyond the event. All of the projects and hacks/makes will be made available online through the website to allow people to continuously work on projects and access resources and information.

Will there be prizes? I collect shiny things

Yes, there are 6 different categories, but bragging rights is the biggest prize of all.

What sort of things get made? Can I build a time machine?

You can make anything you like, for inspiration take a look at  the cool projects made by people at previous international Science Hack Days. Before the event kicks off  you can add any project ideas you are interested to the list of projects here. There will be lots more projects made on the day.
